Pizza Week at The Kids’ Cookery Co.!

We’re back in the kitchen!

Our first week of classes was all about one of the biggest childhood favourites — pizza! 🍕

The children made their own pizzas, choosing their toppings, spreading their sauce, sprinkling their cheese and getting creative with their designs. While the pizzas cooked, they also designed and decorated their very own pizza boxes to take their creations home in.

There were lots of smiles, plenty of concentration and, most importantly, lots of "I made it myself!" moments. 🥹

But isn't pizza "junk food"?

We don't think foods need to be labelled as "good" or "bad".

Pizza can absolutely be part of a balanced diet, it comes down to what goes into it, how it's prepared and what you serve alongside it.

Making pizza from scratch gave our little chefs the opportunity to discover this for themselves.

A pizza can provide:

🧀 Protein & calcium from cheese

🍅 Fibre & micronutrients from vegetables and tomato sauce

🌾 Carbohydrates & energy from the base

🫒 Healthy fats depending on the ingredients used

And we can make the meal even more complete by adding a source of protein and a variety of vegetables, alongside fruit or another nutritious side.

Why let children make their own?

Cooking isn't just about learning recipes.

When children cook, they're practising fine motor skills, following instructions, measuring, decision-making, creativity and independence — while also becoming more familiar with different ingredients.

And perhaps most importantly, they're learning that food can be something to enjoy, explore and create, rather than something to feel guilty about.

That's exactly the relationship with food we want to encourage at The Kids’ Cookery Co.

Our Dough?

We used a simple recipe designed especially for little hands! No yeast and no waiting for the dough to rise however still soft and tasty!

Try our dough recipe at home with your little ones:

125g Self raising flour

75g Yogurt (natural/greek/greek style)

1tsp olive oil

pinch of salt

  1. Mix all ingredients together to form a dough - you will need to do alot of arm work and squishing until it gets into a ball

  2. once into a ball you need to knead your dough on a flat hard surface for around 5 mins (may take longer for smaller hands so please be patient with them as this is a good way to help their little muscles)

  3. Now your dough is ready, roll it out into whatever shape you want and desired thickness (remember not too thick because the dough will rise in the oven)

  4. Spread you sauce and add your toppings and then pop in the oven 180 degrees (fan assisted) for around 20mins.

Bonus tip: if you want brown crispy crust brush some oil on the crust before putting it into the oven.

What's next?

Next week we're swapping pizza for Little Chef Sausage Rolls!

The children will be mixing, shaping, rolling and creating their own sausage rolls, followed by a fun activity while they cook.

See you in the kitchen!
